The Pact
Brief History:
Orphelia is from Sharlayan, a graduate of the studium and ready to take on Etheryis. She is a lover of the arts, especially the culinary arts, and never quite felt at home on the shores of the academics.Following in her parent's footsteps, she worked with them as a gleaner, focusing on combat medicine for field missions. Orphelia grew to love Eorzea from her journeys, and took the first opportunity she could to relocate to Ul'Dah and live the life of an adventurer! However, things did not work out as planned. Orphie very quickly grew accustomed to a lavish lifestyle she could not maintain, and spent more of her time in the Golden Saucer than finding work in the Adventurer's Guild. She hit an all-time low, having found herself owing the Mandervilles more gil than she could ever hope to pay back.Until she met the Family. She sought the family for work (and payment up front) and ended up becoming an initiate in exchange for her debts paid.
Thing did not go well on a mission with her new associates. Her body perishing in an intense battle with a formidable enemy of the family's. Orphy's anima was only spared thanks to a speedy response from leadership, leaving her soul now housed in a stolen body.Tragedy struck twice. Orphelia received word that her mother was gravely ill back in Labryinthos and her attention at home was needed immediately. Orphy rushed home to be with her mother, only to discover a woman who was a shadow of her former self... and someone unable to recognize her daughter in her new form.
Orphy did everything she could to heal her mother and ease her pain. Nothing seemed to work. Orphy spent several moons trying to cure her mother, and in a moment of desperation utilized an ancient Sharlayan astrology to turn back her mother to before the illness took hold.
This, obviously, did not work, and the rush of aether that was forcibly pushed into her mother's body caused it to explode - and scramble Orphelia's mind, causing her to forget most of who and what she holds most dear.
After some time, she found a makeshift solution to her problems. White auracite, confiscated from the house of a man she went home with, housed a powerful but weakened voidsent that was itching to get out. Desperate for a solution, Orphelia negotiates a pact with the being, allowing the voidsent to feed on her excess aether as a solution to her illness, and in exchange increase her magic prowess. However, Orphelia did not forsee just how much of a corrupting influence a voidsent may have. In an attempt to make peace with her new situation and use it to her advantage, Orphelia has switched her research to that of the void, hoping to use it for medicinal purposes.

The Pact
Orphelia was panting as she ran through the snowy streets of Foundation. Her satchel was clutched tightly to her chest, one hand covering the top to ensure nothing spilled out. The Xaela was carrying precious cargo: white auracite she had nabbed from the gentleman’s home where she had stayed the night before.
It wasn’t like Orphelia to go home with a stranger, but these were troubling times. For the past two cycles, her aether had become increasingly unstable. Spells that had once been trivial in her Studium days were now taxing to cast. Her father’s nouliths hung unused, as she could no longer control the device with the mastery she once had. She had read countless tomes, researching on her own, only to find no answers. Orphelia had even reached out to a renowned doctor from the underground, only to be told she was dying if she didn’t find a solution soon.
Everything felt hopeless for Orphelia... until a soft, shrill voice called to her in the night.
She sat up in bed, careful not to disturb the person beside her, and listened closer. "Orphelia… Orpheliiiaaa…" Tilting her head, she felt an almost hypnotic air wash over her as the matronly voice called from the dresser. Softly, she padded over to it, opening the drawer with barely a creak. Inside, a glowing white crystal revealed itself.
“Oh hells, I thought someone would never notice me..."
Perhaps, under normal circumstances, Orphelia would have scrutinized waking up to a talking crystal. However, nothing had been "normal" for her in quite some time. She picked up the auracite and whispered to it. "Is... is someone stuck in there?" The auracite hummed in response.
Being well-read, Orphelia recognized the crystal as white auracite. She also knew that Ascians and other beings could be trapped inside. It was dangerous, but she grabbed the crystal regardless, quickly placing it in her satchel and slipping on her shoes. The front door creaked as she opened it, and as the man stirred in bed, she bolted for the door and into the nearest alley, heading towards Coerthas Highlands.
The auracite hummed in her bag, filling Orphelia with a warm glow. It seemed pleased to have left the drawer with her. Once she was certain she wasn’t being followed, Orphelia slowed her pace, panting as she fished the crystal out of her bag. She found a secluded spot on the outskirts of the city and sat down on a bench.
Holding the crystal, Orphelia cleared her throat. “Alright, tell me what you are... and how you ended up inside this auracite.”
The auracite’s hum flickered. "Oh dear, I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time... anyone could have ended up in one of these things."
Orphelia shook her head, closing her eyes. “If you’re not going to give me answers… I could just return you to the workshop you were in…”
The auracite jumped in her hand. “No! Fine…” It groaned audibly. “I’ll play along for now, dearie. They once called me Andraste, though I can scarcely remember, being stuck in here for so long.”
“What are you?” Orphelia asked forcefully. “An Ascian? A Voidsent?” The vibrations intensified.
“Ah, so you’ve guessed. Yes, dearie, a Voidsent. But I have no desire beyond returning to my home in the Thirteenth. Would you be so kind as to let me out so I can go back?"
A lie—Orphelia could tell as much. But inspiration struck. This could be the solution she had been seeking for months.
Orphelia rolled the crystal between her hands, running her thumb across its edges, feeling the immense energy trapped within. It was powerful—perhaps more so than some of the mages she had encountered over the years.
“You’ll be weak if I let you out. You’d never make it to the Thirteenth in the state you’re in,” Orphelia said softly but firmly. “I’ll let you out, but there are conditions.”
Andraste scoffed. “Conditions? And what might those be, girl?” The auracite rumbled. “Go on, speak up before I find someone else to free me from this blasted thing.”
“Whether I free you or not, you wouldn’t make it 20 ilms before you ran out of energy,” Orphelia smirked. “You’ll need aether to make it on your own, or to summon your own voidgate. I… I need help stabilizing mine.” Orphelia winced as memories of her mother’s tragic death flashed before her eyes—her guts splattered around the hut she had raised Orphelia in, an eye dangling from the chandelier. “I need to be stronger, more powerful… to protect those I care about.” Orphelia gripped the crystal, holding it to her face. “Stay with me, grant me power and knowledge. In exchange, I’ll free you—and you can feed on my aether. Make a pact with me.”
Andraste was silent, the humming stopped. After a few moments, Orphelia sighed and leaned back, gazing up at the beauty of the night sky. She reached for her satchel—when Andraste finally gave her answer.
